"The student would come in and they would be so hungry that they would ask me for the apple I just took a bite of," she says. What does make her hesitate, however, is a trend that she began to notice. So when one catches her in the middle of lunch, needing help to navigate the CalWORKs welfare-to-work program she helps facilitate, she doesn't hesitate to invite him to have a seat. “There’s no ownership over the issues.Cherie Bromley-Taylor has an open door policy with the students she works with at San Diego City College. “No one’s really taking ownership and being like, I can fix this, it is my job,” Goldade said. Hsieh said she's trying to be patient and has hope that the damage will eventually get fixed, but Goldade said he's ready to move out of the dorms next year and be done with the issues of student housing altogether. In the meantime, both Goldade and Hsieh have accepted that beyond filing requests for maintenance, there’s not much that students can immediately do to solve the problems. The windows in Goldade’s room and almost half of those in the rooms on his floor leak too, he said when UC Berkeley housing authorities conducted mandatory checks of the dorm, they took photos of the leaking windows, but they still haven’t been fixed, Goldade said. Goldade said a floormate’s room has mold growing in it from the humidity this student’s maintenance request has also gone unanswered, he said. Goldade called the university’s communication “really bad” and said it seems like there is a lack of ownership over whose job it is to fix these issues. Luu confirmed that other parts of the center are open. He added that the flooding has not affected the mailroom or most of the other student services. Ratliff said that restoration teams have been on-site at Unit 2 since January and believes the impacted communal areas will be open again by late April. “Quite literally, that entire area is completely boarded off.” “I went down to the music room to try and use it, and there's a sign saying you can't use it,” said Luu, a music minor who takes courses that require access to a piano. In Unit 2, communal music practice rooms were closed early in the semester due to flooding, frustrating students like Charles Luu who rely on those areas to complete coursework. SFGATE asked the university about the missing ceiling panels and leaking in Unit 1 but did not receive comment. “I typically just recommend students fill out a maintenance request form and wait until the maintenance team gets to their case - an inconvenient reality,” she wrote in an email to SFGATE. She feels the university is not prioritizing maintenance, and she said she’s not really sure how to guide students who come to her with these issues. SFGATE sent Ratliff a list of the issues that students shared with it, including the damage on Goldade’s floor. Goldade said they never heard from the university about it. UC Berkeley spokesperson Adam Ratliff wrote in an email to SFGATE that students should report problems “immediately” so they can be fixed in a “timely manner.” Goldade’s roommate, Max Velasquez, said the residential assistant on his floor in Unit 3 submitted a maintenance request on their behalf due to the water damage.
